Bolton Hospitals NHS Trust Leans to MSoft

May 22nd 2007 Bolton Hospitals NHS Trust, a pioneer of implementing lean methodology in the NHS, is the latest UK NHS trust to commit to MSoft's Blood tracking solution.

Based in Bolton General Hospital the system will control three issue fridges in pathology, main hospital and maternity linking to a Clinisys laboratory information management system. For Sharran Payne a consultant biomedical scientist (practitioner/manager in Clinical & Laboratory Transfusion) the new system has already paid dividends.

“It certainly helped when completing the Hospital Blood Bank Compliance report for the MHRA recently and the need for compliance with respect to the EC regulations for robust cold-chain management was a main driver for us installing the system in the first place.  The selection of MSoft after an extensive evaluation of our options was also easy, their system was the best and the company was flexible and responsive to our needs,” according to Payne.

Those needs have been developed in line with lean methodology which has seen a Hospital wide drive to take waste out and error away from all areas both patient facing and throughout all the ancillary services.  Bolton has recently outlined its ongoing five year plan to achieve transformational service improvement deliver a step change in quality and safety of service whilst delivering cost reduction through waste management.

“From the perspective of blood tracking what this meant having the functionality not just for compliance but to better process manage the secure delivery of blood across a busy hospital both now and in the future where we could have broader goals to meet such as electronic procurement and working with the   ‘Connecting for Health framework‘, adds David Hamer, head biomedical scientist/Blood Sciences service manager for Bolton Hospitals Trust.

“We're delighted to be working with Bolton Hospitals NHS Trust,” comments Martin Blake sales director for MSoft. “Most of our success in blood tracking has been with Fridge and ward based systems and this shows just how appealing and effective our IBM kiosk solution is for Trusts looking at Fridge based solutions.”
